Administration mode for a Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) environment

Purpose of Administration Mode:

The administration mode for a Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) environment is a feature that allows administrators to perform maintenance or apply updates while minimizing disruption for users. When an environment is in administration mode:

Only users with administrative roles can sign in.

Regular users will not be able to access the environment, which can help prevent any data corruption or loss during maintenance or updates.

Administrators can perform tasks like applying updates, performing tests, doing data cleanup, configuration changes, or any other maintenance tasks that might require the system to be restricted.

This mode is particularly useful when you need to work on your system but don't want to impact the daily operations of your users. Once maintenance is complete, administrators can turn off the administration mode and the environment will return to normal operations. The users are not informed of the administration mode being active, so you might want to communicate these periods of potential downtime in advance.

How to set Administration Mode:

  1. Sign into the Power Platform admin center:  https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/
  2. Select 'Environments' in the left-hand navigation menu.
  3. Click on the environment you want to manage.
  4. Click on the 'Settings' tab at the top of the page.
  5. Click on 'Edit', then you can change the Administration Mode setting.
